People lose their hair at different rates and with varying degrees of severity. So when is the right time to seek treatment from a hair restoration physician? Dr. Bernstein discusses how to approach treating your hair loss and when to seek answers from a physician.
I am often asked by patients, "When should I come in to a hair restoration physician?" The answer is: as soon as you think you are losing your hair. There are two different questions. One is when you should be evaluated by the doctor, the other is when you should have a hair transplant. In general, the earlier you seek treatment, the better. The later that you can do a hair transplant, the better. So there are two, actually, different issues. If you're losing your hair, and you have genetic hair loss, using medication, such as [Propecia (finasteride)] or [Rogaine (minoxidil)], is most effective when started early. Now, there are pros and cons to using the medications, and I'm not suggesting that it's appropriate for every patient, but if you decide to use those medications, the medicines are best used early. Surgery, on the other hand, is not used as a prevention. You need to have a significant amount of hair loss unresponsive to medication in order for surgery to be appropriate. Also, you need to be old enough for us to make sure that we understand the pattern of your hair loss and also that the back and sides of your scalp, the donor area where we get the hair from, is going to be permanent. And that often cannot be determined when someone is very young.
