Answers to frequently asked questions about Bernstein Medical – Center for Hair Restoration, our hair loss consultations, and hair restoration procedures.

Where in New York City is Bernstein Medical Located?

Our hair restoration facility is located at 110 East 55th Street, New York, NY (between Park and Lexington Avenues) on the 11th floor. Click here if you need directions or simply contact us by telephone if you have any questions: 212-826-2400.

What is the Fee for a Hair Loss Consultation?

There are two types of consultations at Bernstein Medical, the Consultation for Patterned Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia) and the Comprehensive Hair Loss Evaluation.

The fees for these consultations can be found on the Consultation Fees page.

Who Performs Hair Loss Consultations at Bernstein Medical?

All of our hair loss consultations are performed personally by one of our board-certified physicians. We do not utilize “sales staff” or “consultants.”

Will the Doctor at the Consultation Also Perform the Surgical Procedure?

Yes.

How Long Does a Consultation Last?

Depending upon the complexity of the hair loss, your consultation may last from 15 to 45 minutes, although a half hour is about average. We advise patients who are coming in for the first time to arrive at least 15 minutes before their actual appointment so that there will be time to complete medical history paperwork and a general information form, and to review a HIPAA privacy statement. In addition, due to the nature of our practice, some patients may require more than the scheduled half hour. Since hair transplantation is an elective procedure, we try to accommodate all questions and concerns at the time of the initial consultation. Click here to schedule a physician consult.

What if I Can’t Visit Your New York City Hair Restoration Facility for a Consultation?

In-person consultations in our New York City office are preferred because an exam allows the doctor to better evaluate your hair loss. However, if you are unable to travel to NYC for a consultation, we invite you to fill out our online consultation form. There are directions that will instruct you as to the photos and information that you need to provide. After reviewing the information submitted, the doctor will assess your potential candidacy for medical therapy, surgical hair restoration, or corrective work.

Can I Schedule Hair Transplant Surgery Directly After an Online Consult?

Yes, after someone is deemed a candidate they are welcome to schedule surgery. However, we ask that patients who schedule hair transplant surgery or corrective work via an online consultation make an appointment to see Dr. Bernstein at least one day prior to the scheduled date of the procedure. This will allow the doctor to do a more precise assessment of the number of grafts to transplant or, with corrective hair transplants, to determine the extent of the repair work necessary.

Are Lab Tests Required Prior to Hair Transplant Surgery?

Yes, we require a screen for Hepatitis B and C, HIV, a CBC (blood count) and a Chem Screen. You can have your blood drawn at our facility or we can provide you with a requisition slip to have it done at a lab of your choice.

What Can I Expect the Day of the Hair Transplant Procedure?

Depending on the type of hair restoration surgery you will be having (i.e. robotic hair transplant, FUT, or corrective surgery) your visit can take from several hours to a full day. During this time, you may be given sedatives by mouth in addition to local anesthesia. As a result, you may doze through some of your procedure. We have a video library, so you can choose to watch movies during the course of the day, or just watch TV. If you would rather listen to music, just let us know. We will make every effort to keep you relaxed and comfortable.

Does Bernstein Medical Accept Insurance and Can I Submit Hair Restoration Surgery for Insurance Reimbursement?

No, we do not accept insurance for consultations or hair transplants. Hair transplantation is considered a cosmetic procedure and is generally non-reimbursable.

If the hair transplant procedure, or corrective surgery, is due to an injury or medical condition, then it may be reimbursable. We would be happy to supply you with an operative report in these situations. Because the regulations in New York may be different from other states, it would be worthwhile for you to contact your individual carrier.

Are Medical Assistants in Your Hair Restoration Facility Full-time Employees?

All of our medical assistants are full-time employees and, in fact, many have been working at Bernstein Medical for more than a dozen years. All medical assistants are specifically trained by Dr. Bernstein to perform his pioneering Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) procedures. We do not hire per-diem staff.
